Logistics is sometimes referred to as a barometer of the economy – by monitoring supply chains, it is possible to show deviations in the functioning of the economic system. It was clearly shown by the pandemic, which influenced the number of forwarding orders and disrupted the transport of goods. All the terms used – transport, forwarding and logistics – are included in the common acronym TSL, which defines the transport, forwarding and logistics industry. In today’s article, we’ll tell you how to successfully differentiate between these concepts. We will also explain what logisticians, carriers and forwarders do. We invite you to read!

The goal of logistics is optimization

Although the terms related to the TSL abbreviation seem to be synonyms, it is worth emphasizing that transport, logistics and domestic forwarding are not the same. The second of the above-mentioned terms defines the skillful management of the flow of goods, especially planning, implementation and control of transport. Logistics is all about optimization – the route must make economic sense. Therefore, the logistician cares about lowering the cost of the supply chain and faster reaching the destination.

Freight forwarding and transport – how do they differ?

Organizing is the key word when it comes to shipping. Each forwarding company deals with the preparation of the delivery, and the forwarder’s task is to analyze the routes leading to the place of unloading. The road is chosen with the speed of reaching the destination in mind, but also the safety of the driver with whom the forwarding specialist is in constant contact. The forwarder also selects the means of transport in terms of the size and type of cargo. This requires specialist knowledge, also in the field of Polish and international law. Often, the forwarding work also concerns insurance or customs clearance. It should be noted that the forwarding is one of the logistical operations, but not everyone is a forwarder logistician.

All efforts of logistics and forwarders are aimed at one thing – effective transport of goods. Road, water or air transport is the last stage of the entire process, completed with unloading. The first fiddle in transport is played by carriers, as well as their subordinate drivers. The first fiddle in transport is played by carriers, as well as their subordinate drivers.

Although logistics, as well as forwarding and transport have developed tremendously recently, they still have great development potential in Poland, Europe and the world. The boom in e-commerce has an impact on the increasing opportunities of the TSL industry. The boom in e-commerce has an impact on the increasing opportunities of the TSL industry. On the other hand, strategic infrastructure projects – such as the Chinese One Belt, One Road, which is a project popularly referred to as the reactivation of the Silk Road – may also contribute to the development of the TSL industry in the near future. It will also be important for our region.
